Fire Risk Assessment Checklist – Procedure
Use this procedure to evaluate fire hazards, identify risks, and implement safety controls to protect personnel and property.
1. Identify Fire Hazards
- Inspect premises for sources of ignition such as electrical faults, open flames, and flammable substances
- Check storage and handling of combustible materials
- Evaluate housekeeping standards to reduce clutter and flammable waste
- Assess areas with cooking equipment or heating systems
2. Identify At-Risk Individuals
- Map personnel locations across work zones and shifts
- Identify those with limited mobility or access to escape routes
- Document presence of contractors or visitors on-site
- Account for nighttime or isolated workers
3. Evaluate and Reduce Risks
- Install fire detection, alarm, and suppression systems
- Maintain access to extinguishers and fire exits
- Enforce no-smoking zones and safe chemical storage practices
- Train staff in fire response and safe evacuation procedures
4. Record Keeping and Safety Plan
- Create a fire risk assessment report with findings and actions
- Maintain emergency contact list and building layout maps
- Document training logs and inspection dates
- Review safety plan annually or after significant changes
5. Review & Maintain Compliance
- Conduct periodic fire drills and alarm tests
- Audit safety signage and fire equipment readiness
- Evaluate corrective actions post-incident or drill
- Ensure compliance with national and local fire safety regulations
