Perform this detailed monthly inspection to ensure forklift safety, reliability, and compliance with OSHA 1910.178 standards.
1. Monthly Inspection Preparation
- Schedule inspection during downtime or low-traffic hours
- Gather required tools (calipers, torque wrench, gauge set)
- Review last inspection for unresolved issues
- Clean forklift to access service points
- Check service logs for recurring faults
2. Forks and Mast
- Check forks for bend or wear (heel thickness > 90%)
- Lubricate mast rollers, lift chains, and tilt cylinders
- Inspect mast welds, guide tracks, and backrest
- Measure chain stretch using chain gauge (max 3%)
- Check carriage security and fork locking pins
3. Fluids and Filters
- Check and top off engine oil, coolant, and hydraulic fluids
- Drain fuel water separator
- Visually inspect fluids for color and contamination
- Replace hydraulic and fuel filters if needed
- Record amount of fluids added in maintenance log
4. Engine, Exhaust & Battery
- Inspect radiator, hoses, and coolant fan for leaks/wear
- Clean air intake and check air filter condition
- Check battery voltage, cables, and mounting bracket
- Test battery under load if high-usage fleet
- Check exhaust system for rust, damage, or looseness
5. Brakes and Drive System
- Measure brake pad thickness
- Test parking brake on incline
- Inspect wheels, tires, and tread wear
- Lubricate wheel bearings if serviceable
- Torque lug nuts to factory spec
6. Safety System Check
- Inspect seat belt, horn, lights, alarms
- Verify load rating plate is legible
- Confirm fire extinguisher is present and charged
- Test emergency stop and safety interlocks
- Document any defects or missing safety gear
7. Documentation and Follow-Up
- Log all checklist findings and maintenance performed
- Update inspection interval and set reminder
- Report issues needing technician or part orders
- Submit digital form via Oxmaint APP or web portal
- Retain records for OSHA compliance
