Handwashing Sink – Inspection Procedure
Follow these structured procedures to ensure safe, hygienic, and compliant handwashing sink operation.
Water Temperature Testing
- Use calibrated thermometer with probe
- Turn on hot water and let run for 30 seconds
- Place thermometer under stream and wait for reading to stabilize
- Verify temperature reaches minimum 100°F
- Confirm temperature does not exceed 120°F for safety
- Record temperature in inspection log
Drainage Evaluation
- Fill sink basin approximately halfway with water
- Release stopper/plug and time drainage
- Complete drainage should occur within 60 seconds
- Listen for gurgling or unusual sounds
- Check for water backing up in other fixtures
- Inspect P-trap for leaks during drainage
Sensor Function Testing
- Approach sensor at normal hand position
- Verify water activates within 1-2 seconds
- Hold hands in position for 15 seconds to verify continuous flow
- Remove hands and verify water stops within appropriate timeframe
- Test at different angles to verify sensor coverage area
- Check battery indicator or power connection if applicable
ADA Compliance Verification
- Measure sink height from floor to rim (34" max)
- Verify knee clearance (27" min height × 8" min depth)
- Test controls for operation with closed fist
- Confirm 5 lbs or less of force needed for operation
- Check reach range for accessories (48" max height)
- Verify all exposed pipes are insulated
