5S Audit Checklist – Procedure
Follow this systematic approach to audit your workplace using 5S methodology: Sort, Set in Order, Shine, Standardize, and Sustain.
1. Sort (Seiri)
- Identify and remove unnecessary items from the workplace
- Label and isolate items for disposal or storage
- Ensure walkways and workstations are clear of clutter
- Check that tools and materials in use are essential
2. Set in Order (Seiton)
- Arrange items so they are easy to find and access
- Label storage areas, shelves, and drawers clearly
- Use visual management tools such as floor markings
- Ensure frequently used items are close to point of use
3. Shine (Seiso)
- Clean workstations, equipment, and tools thoroughly
- Check for and report oil spills, dust, and dirt buildup
- Verify cleaning responsibilities are assigned and rotated
- Inspect for worn-out or damaged tools and replace as needed
4. Standardize (Seiketsu)
- Ensure uniform practices across all work areas
- Post 5S guidelines and audit scores visibly
- Review 5S audit criteria and documentation
- Calibrate and standardize visual indicators and metrics
5. Sustain (Shitsuke)
- Promote a culture of continuous improvement
- Conduct regular training and awareness programs
- Review progress and reinforce good practices
- Celebrate teams with high 5S scores and consistency
