Load Testing Procedure
- Ensure appropriate PPE is worn (safety shoes, gloves)
- Apply controlled weight or pressure to center of grate
- Observe for excessive deflection (sag) under load
- Check for any movement or rocking during load
- Listen for unusual sounds indicating structural issues
- Verify grate returns to normal position after load removal
Drainage Assessment
- Pour measured amount of water upstream
- Observe water flow through openings
- Time how long water takes to drain completely
- Check for pooling or backflow issues
- Verify trench channel is clear of obstructions
- Confirm downstream connections are functioning
Corrosion Evaluation
- Use wire brush to test surface integrity in corroded areas
- Measure material thickness at critical points
- Tap test to identify hollow sounds indicating internal corrosion
- Document location and extent of corrosion with photos
- Check welds and joins for galvanic corrosion
- Compare current condition to previous inspection records
Anchoring Verification
- Check all fastener types are correct for application
- Verify torque on bolts with calibrated torque wrench
- Examine frame connection to concrete/substrate
- Test security by applying moderate lateral force
- Inspect for cracks in surrounding material
- Verify locking mechanisms function as designed
