A forklift that's down for a day doesn't just stop one driver. It stalls a line feed, holds up a dock, and pushes work onto the trucks that are left. Most breakdowns start as something an operator could have seen on a walk-around: a weeping hose, a worn tire, a chain that's gone dry, a horn that doesn't sound. This checklist is organized by the six systems of a truck, so operators and technicians can inspect in the same order every time and tag out what isn't safe. OxMaint AI maintenance management software turns each failed item into a tracked work order for that specific truck.

Forklift Preventive Maintenance Checklist for Manufacturing

Find the system on the truck, tick through its checks, and know exactly when to take it out of service. Then run the same inspection on mobile so every truck has its own record.

Start with the Truck: Six Systems to Inspect

Every item on the checklist belongs to one of these six zones. Use the numbers on the diagram to jump to the matching tab below. The drawing is a generic sit-down counterbalance truck, so adapt it to your fleet. Start free and register each truck as an asset.

The Checklist, System by System

Tap a tab, tick the checks, and read the tag-out triggers. In the US, OSHA requires powered industrial trucks to be examined before use, at least daily, and after each shift on round-the-clock operations (29 CFR 1910.178). Always follow your site rules and the manufacturer's manual. Book a demo to run this on mobile.

Tag out if: forks are cracked or bent, or a chain is broken or badly damaged.
Tag out if: a tire is badly damaged, or wheel fasteners are loose or missing.
Tag out if: brakes are weak or fade, the parking brake won't hold, or steering is loose or binding.
Tag out if: there's an active leak, a damaged hose, or a raised load that drifts down.
Tag out if: cables are damaged, there's a fuel or LPG leak, or warning lights signal a fault you can't clear.
Tag out if: the overhead guard is damaged or safety devices like the horn or restraint don't work, per your site policy.

A Tag on the Steering Wheel Isn't a Work Order.

When a check fails, someone has to fix it, and someone has to approve the truck back into service. OxMaint AI lets operators run the inspection on mobile and turns failed items into tracked work orders for that truck, with notes and photos attached.

The Inspection Rhythm: What to Do and When

Intervals vary by manufacturer, truck type, and duty cycle, so use this as a starting framework and confirm with your manuals. Start free and schedule each interval per truck.

Every shift
Operator walk-around on all six systems before use
Weekly
Lubricate chains, check fluid levels, battery water where applicable, tire condition
Hour-based service
Oil, filters, and fluids at manufacturer-set hour intervals (commonly a few hundred hours)
Major service
Deeper brake, hydraulic, mast, and drivetrain checks by a qualified technician
Annual
Full inspection, fork measurement, chain wear check, and fleet review

Frequently Asked Questions

How often should forklifts be inspected?
Operators should examine the truck before each shift, and more thorough preventive maintenance follows manufacturer intervals. In the US, OSHA requires at least daily examination before use. Start free and schedule inspections.
What should be on a forklift inspection checklist?
Forks and mast, tires, brakes and steering, hydraulics, the power system (battery, engine, or LPG), and safety equipment like the guard, horn, lights, and restraint. Book a demo of a digital checklist.
When must a forklift be taken out of service?
When a defect makes it unsafe to operate, such as failed brakes, cracked forks, active hydraulic leaks, or inoperative safety devices. Follow your site policy and the manufacturer's guidance. Sign up free and log tag-outs.
Who should perform forklift repairs?
Qualified, authorized technicians, following the manufacturer's procedures. Operators report defects, but they shouldn't attempt unsafe repairs. Book a demo of technician assignment.
