1. Stage Lighting Instruments and Dimmer Systems
Stage lighting failures — dropped instruments, failed lamps near flammable materials, overheated dimmer racks — are among the most common causes of school auditorium fires and injuries. Every instrument must be visually checked before each event, and the full system inspected quarterly.
2. Rigging and Fly System
The fly system is the highest-consequence piece of equipment in any school auditorium. A counterweight system failure or a dropped batten above an occupied stage can cause fatal injuries. ANSI E1.4 requires annual inspection by a qualified theatrical rigger — no school should operate a fly system without this inspection on record.
3. Curtains, Drapes, and Soft Goods
Stage curtains represent a significant fire load — a burning main curtain in a packed auditorium is a life-safety event. All stage drapes in school auditoriums must be flame-retardant certified, and that certification has an expiry date that most schools do not track.
